Your writing is so engaging, love your ‘voice’. I get what you’re saying about loving what you do in a system you’re not wedded to. I am a teacher … l too love what l do, working with kids in broken system that l have little regard for … in its blinkered restrictive mainstream labelling and outdated judgements. I think nurses and teachers have a lot in common about seeing sides of life that aren’t necessarily seen or valued by society. BTW, l have a great respect for nurses, l have little respect for doctors who mainly offer gratuitous advice, don’t listen to their patients and merely to serve the pharmaceuticals industry … that’s looking at how it goes down in Australia, in my opinion. Thanks 👍

Simone I agree, these are noble and time honored professions we are a part of. Overall I love what I do. Mostly I choose to stay in the system, and it’s a great way to make a living where I live. That’s not true in all parts of the United States. At work, I am there for the patients. 🩷

I always joke there are two kinds of cops- those who marry nurses and those who marry teachers. Do the police in Australia marry nurses and teachers too? Thanks so much for reading. We follow a lot of research from Australian nurses and I really enjoy having this world perspective here on Substack.

Hi Kristin, Thank you. I am nearing retirement so only working 2 days a week. I too work for those I serve, the kids. They fill my cup as I tell them each Monday and Tuesday, with their engagement and willingness to learn. And they appreciate this aging Fairy-Crone! I am grateful and don't regret my choice of career for a minute. I regret trying to fight the system ... chew you up and spit you out! Interesting what you say about cops; yes, they marry teachers and nurses here too, or each other. I would say cops make the trio, joining us in the 3 professions that deal with a lot of what is hidden while being subject to coulda, woulda, shoulda. Anyway, hope you have a grand day, and yes, I too enjoy conversing wth those around the joint. Cheers.

ICU nurses and Emergency room nurses face many challenges most other nurses and doctors rarely encounter. They are quick thinking decision making skills are second to none. I’ve noticed that take-charge-persona spills into their personal life and they become mama bears in mama bear wives at home, sacrificing much because that’s their motherly nature. I’m sure you are a blessing to your beloved children. 🫶

Kristin you’re a gem Hot Dad should hold tight, and not let go! 💎🥰

Thank you so much. These professions we love so much have a tendency to take over our lives. Sometimes I have to step outside of myself and just allow myself to simply be me and remind myself I’m not at work. Hot Dad and I were having a heated discussion over the best way to replace my shower. I understand plumbing because I do run the continuous machine that does the work of the kidneys and so I said something snarky. He just laughed when I said my loud mouth, knowledge and passion for healthcare would someday come in handy for him. LOL

Very much and we could add many of life’s small pleasures to that list.

Love “Realists”. Tough, gritty, not nice, but kind, usually have great sense of humor, non provoking, no need for political one upmanship, know, without a doubt, nothing can be said to change anyone’s mind, even a slight sideways interjection can send some into maniacal disorder, best to talk about food and dogs without guilt that you’ve given up on making the world a better place. Besides talking about food and dogs does make the world a better place.

I agree and I’ll add music and books to the list of things that make the world a better place. I think we’ve forgotten how human we all are. I know patients are sometimes more alike than different.

Plus being a nice girl never got me very far. There are always ways to make a point without offending. Thanks so much for reading and commenting. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Good and thank you! I’m happy to hear I bring it to a gut level. I rely so much on my gut instincts. Learned to discern what’s an emergency versus a moment of panic. Always nice to see you Thomas.

💯 my friend! Although 92-99-% is a perfectly acceptable level of oxygenation most days!

I appreciate you very much!

It’s strange that someone who is not “in” a particular profession hates that profession. I can understand someone disliking a particular hospital, or a way things are done there, but hating a profession? That makes no sense (unless we are talking about lawyers.. 🤭 I’m joking. Kinda.) it would be more logical for me to hear that she hates a particular person than a profession.. I can tell you from many years of observation, most people’s opinions aren’t logical.

But hey, Hot Dad’s mother doesn’t know what she’s missing if she rules you out before even saying hello.

Aw thank you. I’m sure mom and I will get along fine someday 😜

They don’t call them the Fightin Phils for nothing. It’s a tough crowd with its own love language.

How could anyone not adore nurses? I have been in the hospital over 20 times times for surgeries and procedures and whatnot and the NURSES were the ones who were always there for me, not the doctors. You may not all be angels, but the ones I have met sure as HELL knew what they were doing. Never been in the ICU myself, but it's a very tough job and I'm thankful people like you are there to do it.
